“Limpopo, the Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe, and Makuya have been a constant source of inspiration for me. Now, after years away, I've returned to Makuya Park, eager to capture its unspoiled beauty through this new body of work.

As an art student in Pretoria in the 80s, I was fortunate to have Nico Roos as my mentor. His philosophical approach to landscape art, particularly his admiration for Namibian artist Adolf Jentsch, left an indelible mark on me. My artistic approach is an amalgamation of these inspirations with the land, combining abstract and realistic elements seamlessly. These seemingly disparate art styles speak across the divide of my paintings; While the top half features a specific landscape I've visited, the bottom half is an abstract, two-dimensional representation that invites the viewer to contemplate its meaning… Is it a glimpse into the earth's depths, or purely abstract?

Colour plays a vital role in my work, as the landscapes of northern South Africa are characterized by vibrant hues, dramatic contrasts, and intense colour palettes. For me, colour is an essential means of communication, informing emotions and expanding on conceptual ideas.

Makuya Park is a place of silence and drama, and I'm drawn to return to it again and again, refining my practice as I try to capture its true essence."
