VA HI TSHEMBISE TIKO RA NTSWAMBA NI VULOMBE (THEY PROMISED US LAND FLOWING WITH MILK AND HONEY)
Everard Read at Leeu Estates
Dassenberg Rd, Franschhoek, 7690
In this exhibition of recent drawings Phillemon Hlungwani revisits his home village and the surrounding countryside to present a series of vignettes of the daily life of the villagers. However, underlying the bucolic and peaceful settings is a deep sense of anger at the fact that, decades into a democracy, much of daily life has not changed for those living in Giyani. They still must walk a great distance to access water, health services, and education despite the promises of politicians over the years. VA HI TSHEMBISE TIKO RA NTSWAMBA NI VULOMBE (THEY PROMISED US LAND FLOWING WITH MILK AND HONEY) serves as a reflection of the current state: resources are scarce, but Giyani residents’ strength endures. It is both a lament of broken promises and a call for change – a future where promises are fulfilled.
